SUMMARY:Historic New England and Old York Tour
DESCRIPTION:Historic New England and Old York Historical Society present 250 at Old York: The Rising Tide of Revolution. This new tour highlights York’s Loyalist and rebel politics on the eve of the American Revolution\, as well as its economic ties to Great Britain. This two-part program starts with a tour of Jonathan Sayward’s home\, the Sayward-Wheeler House. The tour includes stories of Sayward\, York’s best-known Loyalist\, and two men he enslaved\, Prince and Cato\, who sought freedom by joining the Continental Army. Following the house tour\, participants will take a break for lunch before meeting at Old York Historical Society’s Museum Center for a walking tour of York village. The tour will include a stop at Sayward’s gravesite in the Old Burial Ground. Guests will also visit the Revolutionary York exhibit in the Remick Gallery\, featuring objects that belonged to Sayward and his family. \nFor the Old York member discount use code: OLDYORK

Prior to that time\, the Abenaki people had been coming to York seasonally for centuries\, farming and fishing near York River\, and calling the region Agamenticus. Throughout the colonial period\, York was the county seat for the Province of Maine\, the center of legal activity\, and a port town whose economy thrived on maritime trade. This walking tour explores the story of colonial York\, and the economic and social transformations that took place following the American Revolution. \nThe tour begins promptly at the Old York Museum Center at 3 Lindsay Rd. Parking is available along Lindsay Road and in Old York’s parking lot. Please arrive no later than 5 minutes prior to the start time. \nThe tour lasts approximately an hour\, and covers a two-block area along York Street. The terrain is uneven\, and comfortable shoes are recommended. There is a slight incline on Gaol Hill.

SUMMARY:The History of Chocolate Making: The American Colonies in the 18th Century
DESCRIPTION:The practice of drinking chocolate began over 3\,500 years ago by people indigenous to South America. By the mid-16th century\, chocolate had been introduced by Spanish colonists. Learn about the history of chocolate from its ancient roots to its popularity during the American Revolution. Martha Washington often served it at Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson thought it would exceed tea and coffee in popularity! Benjamin Franklin is said to have sold it out of his printing shop. \nThe presentation is given by Kristel Henry who has been doing weekly chocolate demonstrations during the summer at Old York for a number of years. This is a special\, in-depth\, evening program. \nFollowing the demonstration\, gather in historic Jefferds Tavern for a special tasting and a sweet treat. \nChocolate generously donated by Kakawa Chocolate House.
